There are different ways to connect this variac, it depends on what you want to do with it.
The normal connection is like this:
- N = common, or neutral
- L = input voltage (220V)
- T = sliding contact (the knob)= output voltage
Now you can vary the output voltage between 0V and 250V .(terminal N <-> terminal T)
If you need an unregulated voltage of 110V (=power supply for US market radio),
it's possible to use the the center tap Z.But in this case you have to change the input
from terminal L to terminal K and the variable output at terminal T is then 0V to 220V.
