spread-band with city/station names rather than numbers

Dear Colleagues,
I am writing in hopes that you may be able to shed some light on a point of radio history that intrigues me, but about which I know very little: the placement of broadcasting station names (Radio Paris, North Regional, etc.) along receiver set spread bands rather than numbers. I find advertisements in Middle Eastern newspapers (my field of specialization is early 20th c Middle Eastern history) from 1938 advertising this as a new innovation, but am not sure whether such bands might have been available in Europe earlier.
Were these bands standard throughout the manufacturers' lines, or did companies make different bands, including different station names, for sets to be sold in different parts of the world?
How did manufacturers choose which stations to include, and which to leave out?
I have seen some sets (I think) with both numbers and station names. Was this more common?
Really, any information, anecdotes, etc. would be much appreciated, as I know extremely little about this.
Many thanks in advance for the kindness of your replies.
Cordially,
Miss Andrea Stanton
