Philips 834a/15 (Techniek Radio/TV)
I have a Philips 834A/15 (with Mullard tubes)which I did some restoration work to a while back (many thanks to people on this forum for help with spare parts & info). The resistive track (1,960 ohms)that acts as the gain control, seems to work in reverse mode (loud when nearly switched off). I don't remember connecting the wires up the wrong way, as they are the same length sequence as from when I disconnected the original damaged control. Are there any other components that would cause this problem?
This set brings back great memories from the 1950's, when my great auntie had one of these radios (in fact she had it from new in 1933). My father (now late)repaired her 834A when I was a small boy.
I never did inherit her 834A radio after she died in 1990 (aged 94yrs), so I bought one at an expo at Birmingham N.E.C. a few years ago.
When I restored my radio, I put new electrolytic caps inside the old containers, and also made it safe to use, so that no one got a nasty shock from accidentally touching both cans at the same time, I wired the (-)returns seperately.
I did not have the shorting plug for the radio/gram, so I went behind the radio socket, and hard wired the terminals.
Cheers
Mike
