Philips 470A drive cord layout (Techniek Radio/TV)

door Mike Horne @, 15.11.2012, 13:45 (4393 dagen geleden)

Hi. As a collector of Philips and other tube/valve radios, I have a model 470A Philips radio that I have recently restored, and have managed to obtain service data for it, but just like the 727A, no information on the tuning drive cord layout was available on the manual. Is there another Philips equivalent radio number that has this data, please?
I really like the appearance of the 470A, and its post war (but smaller)look a like model 371 (I have the "U" version). I would like to clean up the scale lamp reflector, but the cord would have to be removed.
Kind regards
Mike (Leeds, U.K)

Hello Mike.
I hope these pictures speak for themselves.

There is just 1 wire used in a 470A from the varco to (pull) the pointerunit.
It the pointerunit you can see a spring.
The end of the spring 'clicks" itselves in a very little hoak/hole at the back of the dialglass unit behind the pointerunit, so you cannot see it if the pointerunit is still on.

That spring needs several (about 5) pre-scarves (to build up some pre-force)
before you connect the wire to it .
This pre-force is needed to let wind-up the wire back onn the pointerunit again when the varco losens/turns-off the wire..

If you turn the pointerunit to the correct direction, the spring graps onn the hoak iteselves.
If you turn the wrong direction, the spring never graps onn .

So in fact it's a very beautifull, simple and easy wire system.
In fact this system is that easy, that it's hard to figure it out :-D

Good luck and best regards!
Ben Dijkman

Hi Ben. Many thanks for your reply. It was most kind of you to send the photos of the condenser drive cord for the Philips 470A radio, yes it does look simpler now it is explained in photos.
Later on, Philips did show drive cords on their post WWII radios such as the 371U & A.
Kind regards
Mike

Hi Mike,

I suffered the same problem with my 470A after restoring it. After searching I found Mullard MAS221 documentation. On the last page is the condensor cord layout, it is the same as for the 470A.

http://doctsf.com/documents/schematheques/radio_anglais/MULLARD/MAS221.PDF

After re-stringing the condensor you can attach the metal string that pulls the dialpointer to the condensor. The metal string is kept under tension bij a small spring at the back of the dialplate, just wind it a couple of times for the right amount of tension. If al functions well (you can move condensor from fully closed, to fully open and back) you can set the dial at the right place by losening the small screw and turn the dial to the wanted position. The dial adjustment is also mentioned in the Philips manual.

Good luck,
Mans

Hi Mans. Many thanks for your help. I will look for service data for the Mullard MAS221, and also see if there is a Trader Service Sheet for this model (many of these Trader sheets were issued for radios in the U.K)
Kind regards
Mike
