How did Philips make RF & IF transformers 1937 to ‘48?

First time posting on this forum…. I have three Philips radios that use a technique to manufacture the radio frequency and intermediate frequency transformers that appear to be unique to my American eyes. I refer to the parts as used in my D57AU, Mullard MAS24(Philips 660A) and Philetta 204U-19 (exported to Sweden).

Are there any articles (in any language) on how Philips manufactured these parts? Any photographs of the manufacturing process? I would like to gather enough information to write an article for one of the vintage radio publications here in the USA.

Thanks,
Robert – KD4HSH

Hello Robert and welcome !

I posed the same question several month ago and got some pictures of the manufacturing process by Mr. Ger Fust. Have a look here:

Excellent! & Fast!

Just the type of pictures I hoped might be available.

As I compose an article sometime in the winter months, I will come back to see if I need to obtain permissions to include some of these photos in an article that will certainly be published in a not-for-profit journal.

A fascinating bit of engineering indeed.

Thanks,
Robert

this picture published by Ger Fust shows how it was done. The rill into the aluminium shielding of the coil can be made deeper by moving the handwheel at the left side. A r.f. signal generator (left side of the control panel) is used to feed the coil assembly with a signal. At the same time the output voltage of the coil assembly (coil inductance, fixed capacitor and a compensating capacitor) is indicated on the voltmeter at the right side of the control panel. This way the operator is able to tune the coil assembly to the correct frequency.

Hello Robert,

Philips had a technical magazine "Philips Technisch Tijdschrift".
I think i remember I have read an artikel about this transformers in one of these old magazines.
The problem is I do not know where you can find it. Some time ago I landed on an internet page were some numbers of the magazine where downloadable, but I can not find it anymore :-(

Maybe someone else can help you to find the article.

Keyword are "Philips Technisch Tijdschrift" like I mentioned before.
Altough it is all in Dutch language, maybe it is still interesting for you.

Henk

Thanks for the reference to Philips Technisch Tijdschrift - I see that Ghent University has all of them available. But not knowing your language, it is going to be difficult to properly describe the search criteria. A half hour of Google search did not reveal any useful information.

All the best,
Robert
