the diodes I generally replace them all with BYW96E (now almost obsolete) or any similar fast rectifying diode. I generally do not fit any of the 1N400X series nor any of the 1N540X series mostly because they blow more easily than the BYW96E if shorted.

I never put any germanium diodes anywhere as AVO never did that, they only used silicon diodes, especially across the meter as the reading will otherwise be non-linear close to the FSD, from some 70-80% of FSD and up.
