Erres Radio from Indonesia

I was most interested to come across this forum.

I have been living in Surabaya for 20 years and I collect valve radios which I buy locally. As you will know, most sets here in Indonesia are Philips, Erres or NSF.

A few days ago I bought a nice little ERRES five valve set model no. KY 449 in good working order. Although I can find numerous references to other models with the KY number on the Internet I can not come across anything of this particular model.

I have taken some photos of the set if anyone would like to see them.

What I would be interested to know is the year of manufacture and whether or not the set was made in Indonesia or in the Netherlands. It would also be great to get a circuit drawing.

Any information members of this forum could provide me with would be gratefully received.

Another question: I am surprised that all the ERRES sets I have found here only have the SW band. Wasn't there any MW broadcasting in the 1940s and 1950s here?

If you are unable to help me with my enquiries perhaps you would be so kind as to refer me to any other sources of information.

It was the rule at Erres that the type number consisted of the year plus one digit. So this set could be from 1944.

Thank you for that interesting information - most useful. I imagine the set was made in the Philips factory here in Indonesia. I would love to restore the dial display and I wish I could find a reproduction of it as it has faded somewhat.

Does anyone know why the ERRES sets in Indonesia are only SW and not MW?

The choice for SW over MW: my guess is that SW always gave reception everywhere in Indonesia, even in the most remote place, while MW with limited covearge did not hit al parts of your beautiful, but very large country.
Also the many thunderstorms affected MW reception more then SW, the reason LW is never used in tropical areas.

(Mind you, I have been in the seventies in places like Austria where the MW and FM gave no reception at all during daytime, only SW)

Dat is niet zo voor tropenradio's, Gerard. Bij die radio's staat het jaartal juist achteraan, dus dan zou de KY449 uit 1949 stammen. Graeme zou dit kunnen bevestigen door de buizenopstelling te vermelden. In 1949 zouden dat dus rimlock of loctals zijn...

Erres sets made for use in tropical areas may have another type number scheme: KYnyy. In this scheme n is a figure that gives an indication of the class (price, size), and yy gives the year. KY means "Kast IJzer", and has only a historical significance.

An example of such a set is the Erres KY750 dating back from 1950.

Smaller sets are often designed for 1 frequency band only. In tropical areas the SW band is preferred, in Europe the MW band is chosen.

What tube types are used in this Erres set? It may help determing the correct year of production.

Hello Graeme, from the other side of the world, nice to hear from you and from a country that was many years ago a overseas part of the Netherlands. Many of my roots lay there in Indië because my grandparents lived there a long time ago (my grandfather was a Dutch military captain in Indonesia). Nederlands Indië was the name of the archipel in these years. De gordel van smaragd (Multatuli).
And in Padang (Sumatra) my father was born. In 1938 my grandparents went back to Nederland, because my grandmother went ill because of the hot and damp Indonesian tropical climate.
In 1931 my grandparents received from the Dutch government an Erres Radio KY107 and they brought the rasdio back to Holland in 1938. A nice detail is that I inherreted that nice radio from my grandparents and this radio is still the number one in my radiocollection. If you apreciate it I can take a fotograph of this radio and post it our forum. Greetings, Hans

Very nice to hear about you and your story of the Erres set. Yes, I am well acquainted with the Dutch history here as I am an enthusuastic student of Dutch East Indies history and collect period ephemera related to the subject.

How nice to know that your grandfather's set is now operating in the Netherlands. A very nice heirloom!

Have you been to Indonesia? Old valve radios are still to be found here, and as I said on the forum they are mostly Philips, Erres or NSF. They can can be bought for between US$10-30 as there isn't much interest in them. As they are all 110v they have to be plugged into a transformer as we are all on 220v here now. There are early wooden cased models from the 1920s available, although all mine are bakelite.

I have a few nice Erres sets and they are all in working order and I use them from time to time to browse the SW bands.

I would be interested to see a photograph of your KY107.
