Hello Friends! I have recently received a very nice old Philips Allegro 890A. It is the Czech-licensed version, with the A-roehren. I have several questions before I begin restoration:

1) I want to remove the radio from the cabinet so the chassis can be carefully cleaned. It is quite dirty. However, I do not want to try disassembling the Monoknpof before removing the chassis. What is the best way to remove the chassis?
2) I also want to remove the dial scale assembly. The Glas-skala is loose, it appears that the cement holding it in place has failed over the years. The glas-skala is not broken, just loose.
3) The netzschalter control on the side of the radio has a switch on the back, which has come off. The three tabs holding the switch assembly in place have been slightly bent, allowing the Bakelite switch housing to come off. I have found the little fiber plate which makes up the switch element, and I wish to repair it. Can someone assist me in getting this switch back together?
4) There is no power cable. However, just behind the netz-trafo, there is a fiber plate with a number of pins extending out; this is just above the input voltage selector. Does anyone know if there exists a suitable "netz-plug" for these pins?
5) The skala-bulbs are 4V, but what size thread do they have? E10? I will need to acquire a full set of bulbs, perhaps 10 to have some spares.

I have tested all the tubes and they are OK, even the AM1 eye-tube has usable glow!:OK:

I have been sent the entire 33-page Service Manual for the radio, by a friend in Germany. The manual is in Dutch and I have no means to have it translated

If someone can help me with this project, I would be very grateful. My direct e-mail address is ac1y@nc.rr.com

Thanks very much!

Hello Sandy Gerly

I think that the Dutch 890A is a different radio than the Czech licence version.
Because the magic eye in the Dutch version is a EM1 and not a AM1 and the scale bulbs are 6,3 volt lamps instead of the 4 volt ones you need.
The Dutch 890A was called "Concerto", the Czech version "Allegro". Anyway a very interesting radio and also a Monoknob made in 1937/1938.
About the translation of some parts of the service manual you received my email :-)

Hello, Hans! Thank you very much for answering my post on the Forum.

Yes, I know about the Dutch version with the E-roehren. The Service Manual I have indicates those tubes. The file my friend in Germany had, was a large file, too large for e-mail attachment, and I downloaded it from a site he mentioned:

www.getter.de/890A.pdf

Perhaps you could download it and help me translate the important parts of it?

So far, I have carefully removed the Dial Scale housing and cleaned it well. The dial glass cleaned up perfectly and now looks new. I just need to reassemble the housing and re-install it.

It appears that the chassis and the front panel with the Monoknopf assembly can be removed from the cabinet by removing the three metal retaining tabs on the insides of the cabinet front edge. Then, the four mounting screws on the cabinet bottom can be removed and the chassis may be slid out the cabinet from the back. However, there is not much slack in the cables for the cables for the dial-scale indicator, so the chassis cannot come out completely. But, enough, I believe, so the chassis may be cleaned of all the dust and dirt. There are even spider-webs inside the cabinet!

The Monoknopf button assembly is rather loose, so that the tuning control does not operate well. However, the band-switch and the knob movement for the tone control and (I think) bandwidth adjustment seem to operate well, mechanically. There is a whole page in the Service Manual which shows a perfect diagramme of the Monoknopf assembly with its parts. It is on Page O1 and O2.

I look forward to your assistance with my project.

With thanks,

Sandy

Hello Sandy,

I hope you received my second e-mail with 8 steps how to remove the chassis from the cabinet. As you see the chassis comes out together with the dial!
I will try to answer your other questions by email.
Maybe someone can help you with a German or English version of the service manual because that could be the best solution.
If it does not exist, i wil try to translate the important parts of the Dutch version.

Best regards, Hans
